Steven Bullen produced a batting masterclass before Taylor Robinson led from the front with the ball as New Farnley secured an impressive 56-run victory at Methley after posting a formidable 328-5 from their 50 overs.
Asked to bat first, New Farnley laid the perfect foundation through Aidan Langley and Bullen. Langley was in sparkling form, striking 63 from 56 balls, including 13 boundaries, as the pair shared an opening stand of 110 in just 16.4 overs.
While wickets fell intermittently around him, Bullen remained the cornerstone of the innings. Displaying patience, power and superb shot selection, he carried his bat through the full 50 overs to finish unbeaten on 130 from 133 deliveries. His magnificent innings included 11 fours and seven sixes and occupied the crease for more than three hours.
Alex Lilley added 15, Ryan McKendry chipped in with 10 and Ed Brown contributed 22 as New Farnley maintained control throughout the middle overs. The momentum increased dramatically in the closing stages thanks to Fletcher Coutts, who blasted 36 from just 22 balls, before Adam Ahmed provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 25 from only 14 deliveries.
The visitors’ reply began positively, with Taylor Cornall and Kyle Welsh putting together an excellent opening partnership of 132. Cornall played superbly for 133 while Welsh added 51, threatening to take the game deep.
However, Robinson had other ideas.
The off-spinner delivered a decisive spell, repeatedly breaking partnerships and shifting the momentum firmly back in his side’s favour. He first removed Welsh before dismissing Alex Cree and Jake Smart to leave the visitors wobbling.
When Robinson returned to remove Kris Ward and then the dangerous Cornall, the chase was effectively over. His outstanding figures of 5-69 from 13 overs were the standout bowling performance of the afternoon and demonstrated his ability to strike at crucial moments.
Abhay Negi provided excellent support, claiming 4-55 from 13.2 overs. Negi accounted for Bailey Worcester, Charlie Winter, Charlie McMurran and Ben Waite as the lower order was swept away.
With the pressure mounting, Fletcher Coutts also chipped in with the important wicket of James Wainman, whose quick-fire 34 briefly threatened a late revival.
From a position of 132 without loss, the hosts lost their remaining ten wickets for just 140 runs as New Farnley’s bowlers and fielders tightened their grip on the contest. The innings eventually closed on 272 all out in 47.2 overs.
While Robinson’s five-wicket haul ultimately secured the victory, the platform had been built by Bullen’s magnificent unbeaten century. Together, the pair delivered match-winning performances to guide New Farnley to a deserved 56-run success in a high-quality all-round team display.
