New Farnley Reach National Club Championship Final After Four-Run Thriller

What a game! On a baking hot Sunday afternoon at Smethwick Cricket Club, Smethwick and New Farnley served up a terrific National Club Championship Semi-Final that went right down to the wire, with New Farnley eventually securing a dramatic four-run victory to book their place in the national final.

Having been asked to bat first, New Farnley posted an impressive 271 for 7 from their 40 overs. Ryan McKendry led the way with a superb 107 from just 94 balls, including six fours and six sixes, while Steven Bullen contributed a valuable 59 from 79 balls. Alex Lilley added 10, Ed Brown 27, Fletcher Coutts 21 and Abhay Negi 14, with Adam Ahmed unbeaten on 17 at the end of the innings. It was a strong total, but with two terrific sides competing and the conditions favouring the batters, everyone knew the job was far from finished.

Smethwick responded in style and pushed New Farnley all the way. Viken Kedariya produced a magnificent 78 from 78 balls, while Rajpal Beniwal scored 50 and Gurbaj Singh added 52. With the hosts requiring 272 for victory, the game remained finely balanced throughout, but the New Farnley attack held its nerve when it mattered most. Coutts was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 46, while Negi took 1 for 36, Reuben Majithia 2 for 63, Gurman Randhawa 1 for 40 and Ahmed 1 for 21 as Smethwick finished on 267 for 7 from their 40 overs.

New Farnley therefore progress to the National Club Championship Final by just four runs! It was a fantastic advert for club cricket, played in glorious sunshine and in front of an excellent crowd, with both sets of supporters turning out in force and creating a brilliant atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Credit must go to Smethwick for their superb effort and for pushing New Farnley right to the final ball.

It was easy and accessible to get our equipment in. The club it’s self is a modern vibrant space and the audience were equally lovely. They were up singing and dancing from the very first song. We had all the outside alongside the cricket ground, right to the bottom where we were allowed to have a giant inflatable slide. There was a cricket match on at the same time as the party but it didn’t get in the way and we had so much space for the kids to play in. Inside we had room for the food and DJ and a little dance floor . Very nice service and staff on the bar and grounds. A lovely experience would definitely recommend for party.

The staff do all they can to ensure everyone is comfortable and looked after. The added bonus of being able to use the outdoor greens for summer events is great - we played cricket, rounders and boules after a lovely BBQ - all of which was set up for us by the team at the cricket club. I can highly recommend the venue for anyone considering a private event in the area.

Everything about the experience was good from the initial booking to the day itself. All the staff were lovely, the room was just right and the food was good.
