New Farnley Hold Their Nerve In Yorkshire Heavyweight Thriller

Lawns Lane was packed to the rafters on Sunday as two of Yorkshireโ€™s heavyweight clubs went toe-to-toe in the ECB National Club Championship, with New Farnley edging out Hoylandswaine by 10 runs in a contest that fully lived up to its billing.

With a superb atmosphere surrounding the Barry Jackson Ground, supporters were treated to a high-quality encounter between two outstanding sides, and it was the hosts who held their nerve to book their place in Round 2.

After being inserted by the visitors, New Farnley recovered from an early setback thanks to a magnificent unbeaten 97 from opening batsman Steve Bullen. Calm under pressure throughout, Bullen anchored the innings superbly and mixed composure with aggression to guide Farnley to a competitive 188-5 from their 40 overs.

He found valuable support with a 6th wicket partnership of 61 from Adam Ahmed, whoโ€™s lively 18 and late-order acceleration helped push the total towards the 190 mark, while useful contributions throughout the middle order ensured the scoreboard kept moving on a surface offering assistance for the bowlers.

Hoylandswaineโ€™s reply began positively, with dangerous opener Furqan Shafiq striking an entertaining 59, opening bowler Adnan Ghani added further firepower with 35 while former Nottinghamshire and England international Samit Patel ended up on 27 not out. However, New Farnleyโ€™s bowlers refused to let the game drift away.

Abhay Negi produced a match-winning spell, claiming outstanding figures of 5-35 to rip through the visitorsโ€™ batting line-up at crucial moments, deservedly earning Player of the Match honours. He was superbly backed up by Gurman Randhawa, who chipped in with three wickets of his own, while Fletcher Coutts also struck at a key stage as Hoylandswaine were eventually bowled out for 178 in the 38th over.

While the players delivered the entertainment on the field, huge credit must also go to the hard-working New Farnley committee and volunteers behind the scenes. Long before the first ball was bowled, committee members were already hard at work preparing the ground, setting up around the club, organising refreshments and even making early morning cash & carry runs to ensure the day ran smoothly for the huge crowd in attendance. Their efforts once again showcased everything that makes New Farnley such a special club both on and off the field.

Attention now turns to Round 2 where New Farnley will travel to Yorkshire Premier League North side Driffield Town after they defeated Hetton Lyons by eight wickets. The tie will take place on Sunday 31st May 2026, with a 1:00pm start as New Farnley look to continue their National Club Championship journey.

๐ŸŽจโœจ Today Marks A Very Special Milestoneโ€ฆ Farnley Art Friends Is 6 Months Old! โœจ๐ŸŽจ

Itโ€™s hard to believe that back onย 30th October, this group started with just a couple of family members around the tableโ€ฆ and now, just six months later, weโ€™re regularly welcomingย 15+ peopleย to our sessions.
This group began as an idea after Lorraine attended an art session last summer (a 70th birthday gift) and came away thinking โ€”ย โ€œIโ€™d love to create something like thisโ€ฆ but more inclusive.โ€
From not quite knowing where to start, to building something truly special, itโ€™s been an incredible journey to watch.
Week by week, interest grew โ€” from familiar faces, to new members, to a real community forming. And whatโ€™s been created is so much more than an art group.
๐Ÿ’›ย Itโ€™s a place where people feel welcome
๐Ÿ’›ย A place where confidence grows
๐Ÿ’›ย A place full of encouragement, laughter and support
Weโ€™ve had so many lovely comments from members about what the group means to them โ€” and how much itโ€™s helped them. Itโ€™s clear that this is about more than just paintingโ€ฆ itโ€™s about connection and community.
A huge part of that is down toย Lorraineย โ€” her enthusiasm, warmth and constant encouragement. She gives so much to the group, always with a smile, and has created something that genuinely makes a difference to people.
And what makes it even more special โ€”ย thereโ€™s no charge to attend. This group is simply Lorraineโ€™s gift to others.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Farnley Art Friends so far โ€” whether youโ€™ve attended, shared a post, or encouraged someone to come along.
Hereโ€™s to the next chapterย ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ’›โœจ

From Elland Road To The Crease: Longstaff Joins New Farnley

New Farnley Coach Andrew Lawson is โ€œover the moonโ€ after securing the signature of Sean Longstaff, the Leeds United midfielder, from Tynemouth Cricket Club.

New captain Aidan Langley shares that excitement, particularly following the departures of Andrew Brewster, Dan Houghton, Liam Guthrie and Usman Arshad from the two-time Bradford Premier Cricket League champions.

Nigel Martyn โ€” an Leeds United legend who now plays club cricket for Knaresborough in the ECB Yorkshire Premier League North โ€” has seen footage of Longstaff bowling and was impressed.

โ€œSean has got a very good bowling action,โ€ said Martyn. โ€œWhen he signed for Leeds in the summer following his move from Newcastle United, I felt there would be plenty of local clubs eager to welcome him. Iโ€™m sure thatโ€™s still the case.โ€

Longstaffโ€™s most recent appearance for Tynemouth came in the July 5 victory over Felling, where he scored 17 runs and claimed one wicket โ€” his fourth appearance of the season for the clubโ€™s first XI. Whether he will be permitted to continue playing cricket alongside his football commitments at Leeds remains to be seen.

Martyn knows that situation well. During his seven years at Elland Road, after signing under Howard Wilkinson in 1996, his contract prohibited him from playing cricket due to the risk of injury.

There was a time, however, when cricket and football went hand in hand at the highest level. Denis Compton played 78 Test matches for England while also lifting the FA Cup with Arsenal in 1950. Meanwhile, Ian Botham โ€” one of cricketโ€™s all-time greats โ€” kept fit in the winter by turning out for Scunthorpe United in the old Fourth Division.

โ€œThank You To Yeoman Shield For Their Continued Supportโ€

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Graeme Brumwell and Tony Brumwell of Yeoman Shield for kindly agreeing to become one of our main sponsors.

The two brothers have been loyal supporters of the club over many years and are proudly continuing a family tradition, following in their fatherโ€™s footsteps. Peter Brumwell played a pivotal role in establishing our junior section, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to benefit the club today.

Based on Whitehall Industrial Estate, Yeoman Shield are industry leaders in protecting buildings from everyday damage. As part of their generous support, their logo will feature on all of our junior shirts.

Everyone connected with the club is absolutely delighted with their continued backing and incredibly grateful for their investment in our future.

Lukas Ruane On National Service In Finland

Lukas Ruane is working outdoors in temperatures of minus 20C – after enrolling for national service in Finland.

Our 2nd XI opening batsman who is from North Duffield, has just begun 165 days of mandatory service at Utti Air Base, in the south-east of Finland.

Born in 2006 to a Finnish mother who settled down in the village six years earlier with her English husband, Lukas is carrying out the compulsory service Finland requires of every male citizen aged 18 to 60.

After initial service, conscripts join the reserves, usually remaining liable for call-up in an emergency for at least 30 years.

Itโ€™s a duty carried out by all of the men on his mother Sannaโ€™s side of the family, who Lukas said had all served on the same base where he landed on January 5 and with the same regiment he is attached to.

He said: โ€œI feel that if I want to keep my claim to the Finnish passport, I had to do it.

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to be exempted and want to be able to defend my family too if needs be.

โ€œItโ€™s also been a great life experience living in a different country, and itโ€™s also mentally and physically demandingโ€.

Lukas said from a very young age he has always wanted to go into the military and was a cadet at 110 (City of York) Squadron ATC in Burton Stone Lane for nearly four years.

Meeting โ€œa lot of people on the base from opposite ends of the spectrum to my own, who are motivated in different ways to undertake the national service has been a great experience”, he said.

โ€œIโ€™m pretty sure Iโ€™m the only person here who hasnโ€™t lived in Finland”.

โ€œEveryone knows because I have quite an accent”.

โ€œI donโ€™t get treated any differently, apart from the odd extra bit of explaining from a corporalโ€.

Lukas said heโ€™s been drawing strength from an โ€œuntranslatable Finnish word โ€“ย sisuย โ€“ the closest parallel over here being never give upโ€ and is seen as part of its national identity.

His attachment training so far has matched all of his expectation, he said, with the end of one march of 20 kilometres wearing 35kg of kit helping him โ€œget used to being outside, cold and miserable”.

He said: โ€œIโ€™d completed the final part of our war games โ€“ a patrol lasting two hours at minus 20C and had begun the process of winding down.

โ€œAs soon as I got into my sleeping bag in the tent an almighty explosion went off.

โ€œI had to then put all my gear back on and into a foxhole and we began again.โ€

The dual-citizen explained to Finnish news organisationย Kouvolan Sanomatย that his roots on his mother’s side are in Ummeljoki, a village around 15 miles from the base.

Lukas has spent some of his downtime there enjoying meat stews cooked by his grandmother.

He said he wouldnโ€™t join the Finnish military after this part of his service but is keeping his options open, saying he would be returning to the UK after his tour overseas ends in the summer, but very much wants to be a part of public service wherever he is.

He said: โ€œItโ€™s been a great experience and all my friends here in the UK โ€“ many of whom are militarily minded – think itโ€™s pretty cool to be doing what Iโ€™m doingโ€.

His father Shaun said: โ€œLukas is proud to be both half-English and half-Finnish.

โ€œWe know how long heโ€™s been wanting to do it and we knew it would be an unforgettable experience for him, not only to be in Finland for so long, but also for him to meet all sorts of Finnish people, from every walk of life.

โ€œTo say we are proud doesnโ€™t do Lukas justice, we are especially proud of the type of values he demonstrates for someone his ageโ€.

Lukas is expected to return to the UK sometime in June, just in time for him to push for a place in the squad of the Finnish national menโ€™s cricket team, who he has toured with.

In August, the team is taking part in regional cricket world cup qualifiers.

I have recently spoken to John Baldwin (Chairman) and the Cricket Committee (Andrew Langley – Manager, Andrew Lawson – Coach and Aidan Langley – 1st XI Captain) as we are having a new coloured kit for the first team who are currently the National T20 Champions.

We would be looking for a business/company to be our front of shirt sponsor and this includes club membership for two. We would like to agree that it is this per year for two years ideally.

As New Farnley Cricket Club look to the future, the club is now inviting businesses and organisations to partner with us by sponsoring our Senior and Junior teams. Sponsorship provides excellent exposure within the local community and across league competitions, while helping to support grassroots and senior cricket.

If you would like to learn more about our sponsorship opportunities, please contact:

noel.bullock@newfarnleycc.co.uk

We look forward to working with new partners as we continue to grow and build on our recent successes.

Thank You Lils

Following an historic season for the club, Alex Lilley has chosen to hand over the 1st XI captaincy.
His time as captain delivered:

2 League titles, Heavy Woollen Cup Winners, Rigg Bash T20 Group A Winners, National Vitality Club T20 Cup Winners, and an unbeaten 2025 league campaign.

Alex remains a key member of the 1st team.

Congratulations To Mr & Mrs Cromack

Who tied the knot on Thursday and had their reception atย New Farnley Cricket Club. The room transformation byย Elite Event Hireย was absolutely amazing andย Original Discosย kept on playing the tunes late into the night. From the Bride “Had the best day! A Returning Star

We are delighted to announce that Abhay Negi will be returning as our overseas player for 2026. Abhay was integral to our success last year and his presence will be a real boost both on and off field.

We look forward to welcoming Abhay and his wife Mounika back to Lawns Lane!

Big thanks to Rob @WSX Cricket for his help in getting this over the line.

Scotland Taking Bradford Premier League Talent To World Cup

The Scotland Menโ€™s U19 squad that will compete at the forthcoming ICC Menโ€™s U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe and Namibia will feature Yorkshire CCC and New Farnley youngster Max Chaplin.

Bradford Premier League prospect Chaplin helped Scotland make the finals with victory in the ICC Europe Qualifier in August.

The 15-strong squad will fly to South Africa on December 30 for a training camp at Potchefstroom, before heading to Zimbabwe for warmup games against India in Bulawayo and Bangladesh in Harare.

The tournament begins for Scotland on January 15 when they take on hosts Zimbabwe in Harare, followed by matches against Pakistan and England.
