Lukas Ruane On National Service In Finland
Lukas Ruane is working outdoors in temperatures of minus 20C – after enrolling for national service in Finland.
Our 2nd XI opening batsman who is from North Duffield, has just begun 165 days of mandatory service at Utti Air Base, in the south-east of Finland.
Born in 2006 to a Finnish mother who settled down in the village six years earlier with her English husband, Lukas is carrying out the compulsory service Finland requires of every male citizen aged 18 to 60.
After initial service, conscripts join the reserves, usually remaining liable for call-up in an emergency for at least 30 years.
It’s a duty carried out by all of the men on his mother Sanna’s side of the family, who Lukas said had all served on the same base where he landed on January 5 and with the same regiment he is attached to.
He said: “I feel that if I want to keep my claim to the Finnish passport, I had to do it.
“I didn’t want to be exempted and want to be able to defend my family too if needs be.
“It’s also been a great life experience living in a different country, and it’s also mentally and physically demanding”.
Lukas said from a very young age he has always wanted to go into the military and was a cadet at 110 (City of York) Squadron ATC in Burton Stone Lane for nearly four years.
Meeting “a lot of people on the base from opposite ends of the spectrum to my own, who are motivated in different ways to undertake the national service has been a great experience”, he said.
“I’m pretty sure I’m the only person here who hasn’t lived in Finland”.
“Everyone knows because I have quite an accent”.
“I don’t get treated any differently, apart from the odd extra bit of explaining from a corporal”.
Lukas said he’s been drawing strength from an “untranslatable Finnish word – sisu – the closest parallel over here being never give up” and is seen as part of its national identity.
His attachment training so far has matched all of his expectation, he said, with the end of one march of 20 kilometres wearing 35kg of kit helping him “get used to being outside, cold and miserable”.
He said: “I’d completed the final part of our war games – a patrol lasting two hours at minus 20C and had begun the process of winding down.
“As soon as I got into my sleeping bag in the tent an almighty explosion went off.
“I had to then put all my gear back on and into a foxhole and we began again.”
The dual-citizen explained to Finnish news organisation Kouvolan Sanomat that his roots on his mother’s side are in Ummeljoki, a village around 15 miles from the base.
Lukas has spent some of his downtime there enjoying meat stews cooked by his grandmother.
He said he wouldn’t join the Finnish military after this part of his service but is keeping his options open, saying he would be returning to the UK after his tour overseas ends in the summer, but very much wants to be a part of public service wherever he is.
He said: “It’s been a great experience and all my friends here in the UK – many of whom are militarily minded – think it’s pretty cool to be doing what I’m doing”.
His father Shaun said: “Lukas is proud to be both half-English and half-Finnish.
“We know how long he’s been wanting to do it and we knew it would be an unforgettable experience for him, not only to be in Finland for so long, but also for him to meet all sorts of Finnish people, from every walk of life.
“To say we are proud doesn’t do Lukas justice, we are especially proud of the type of values he demonstrates for someone his age”.
Lukas is expected to return to the UK sometime in June, just in time for him to push for a place in the squad of the Finnish national men’s cricket team, who he has toured with.
In August, the team is taking part in regional cricket world cup qualifiers.

New Farnley Cricket Club Seek New Shirt Sponsors
I have recently spoken to John Baldwin (Chairman) and the Cricket Committee (Andrew Langley – Manager, Andrew Lawson – Coach and Aidan Langley – 1st XI Captain) as we are having a new coloured kit for the first team who are currently the National T20 Champions.
We would be looking for a business/company to be our front of shirt sponsor and this includes club membership for two. We would like to agree that it is this per year for two years ideally.
As New Farnley Cricket Club look to the future, the club is now inviting businesses and organisations to partner with us by sponsoring our Senior and Junior teams. Sponsorship provides excellent exposure within the local community and across league competitions, while helping to support grassroots and senior cricket.
If you would like to learn more about our sponsorship opportunities, please contact:
noel.bullock@newfarnleycc.co.uk
We look forward to working with new partners as we continue to grow and build on our recent successes.

Putting The Ground To Bed
Mark, Noel and Sam have been hard at work this week putting the ground to bed for the winter. All seven sight screens with their slats have been dismantled, the fencing removed, the three roll-on covers, numerous flat sheet covers, two practice nets and boundary rope are now safely stored away. The square has also been roped off ready for the colder months ahead.
End of Season Renovations at Lawns Lane
End-of-season renovations are now underway at Lawns Lane, carried out by Ian Bullock using SISIS Machinery.
The work includes:
-
Fraze mowing – a turf renovation technique that shaves off the top layer of turf, removing thatch, organic matter, weed grasses, and surface unevenness. This helps create a smoother and healthier playing surface.
-
Scarifying – a vital maintenance process where rotating blades or tines cut into the turf, removing layers of thatch and moss that can otherwise suffocate grass roots.
-
Top dressing – applied to encourage strong new grass growth and further improve the quality of the playing surface.
These essential renovations will ensure the pitch remains in top condition and ready for the challenges of the next season.

New Farnley Cricket Club – A Season To Remember
Since their formation in 1952, New Farnley Cricket Club has never experienced a season quite like this one. The 2025 campaign will go down as the most successful in the club’s history.
The First XI defended their Bradford League Premier Division title, setting a record number of points (388) and being the fourth team to go through a season unbeaten in the league. They also lifted the Heavy Woollen Cup (one of the oldest club competitions) for the fourth time in five seasons, overcoming Shepley with a 145-run victory at Hanging Heaton.
In the shorter format, New Farnley captured the Rigg Bash T20 by beating Methley by 126 runs at Morley. Their T20 journey continued in style as they progressed through the Area and Regional Finals, defeating York (by 8 runs), Barnard Castle (by 6 runs), Kendal (by 7 wickets), and Old Hill (by 8 wickets) at Burnmoor and Denby. The campaign culminated in a stunning triumph on the national stage, where they beat Wanstead & Snaresbrook by 8 wickets to become National T20 Champions at the picturesque Wormsley Estate, privately owned by the Getty family.
The young Second XI added further silverware, winning the Bradford League Second Eleven Premier Division for the first time in the Premier League era, highlighting the club’s strength in depth while several members of this team also experienced first team cricket.
Meanwhile, the Third XI continue to battle hard in the Dales Council Cricket League Division C. They carry out a vital role giving opportunity to many of our juniors to experience senior cricket and start their journeys.
Altogether, the 2025 season has showcased New Farnley’s quality, resilience, and growing legacy allowing the club to further drive our sustainability and proud history.
New Farnley Win Vitality Club T20 National Final
New Farnley picked up their fourth trophy of their record-breaking season with victory over Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC in the Vitality Club T20 cup final at the picturesque Wormsley Estate.
They were guided to their latest triumph by a chanceless unbroken third wicket stand of 143 between Ryan McKendry and skipper Aidan Langley as an eight-wicket victory was achieved with five balls to spare.
Faced with an early start due to the rain forecast later in the day, New Farnley Langley chose to bowl first as New Farnley hoped to restrict their opponents to a manageable score.
Alex Lilley and Abhay Negi kept things tight early on, with Lilley bowling his four over allocation straight through for excellent figures of 4-0-14-1. New Farnley kept their opponents to 63-1 from the first ten overs, but Wanstead & Snaresbrook had two set batters at the crease who were looking to accellerate.
New Farnley’s fielding was strangley ragged with Adam Ahmed, McKendry and Jonny Phillips all spilling straight forward chances and there were fears among their supporters that they would prove costly.
Gurman Randhawa checked the momentum by picking up three wickets in the middle overs, including both set batters, Haaris Usman (38) and Muhammad Hameed (32) but some powerful hitting from Yuvraj Odedra (45*) from 24 balls with five fours and two sixes) helped his side reach 150-6 by the close. It looked to be a slightly below par score and so it proved.
New Farnley tried to get ahead of the rate from the off with Steve Bullen and Fletcher Coutts opening the batting. Coutts struck two fours while taking nine runs from the first over, only for Zain Shahzad to dismiss both of them in the following over while conceding just a single run.
At 10-2 it was up to captain Langley and Ryan McKendry to rebuild the innings and keep up with the required run rate. Twelve runs came from the third over before McKendry struck back against Shahzad’s second over – hitting him for a four and a six.
At the halfway point, New Farnley were 67-2 – just four runs ahead of the first innings and with similarly set batters. However, Wanstead & Snaresbrook were unable to replicate Randhawa’s magic and dislodge either batter as they kept ahead of the rate with key boundaries and excellent running between the wickets.
McKendry reached his half-century off 46 balls at the end of the 14th over, while Langley brought up his fifty from 36 balls with a single off Odedra at the end of the 17th over.
Twelve runs were required from the final two overs and Wanstead & Snaresbrook brought Shahzad back for a final roll of the dice to try and dislodge either batter. Two runs came from the first two balls to Langley, before McKendry struck him over the boundary for six to deflate the hopes of their opponents.
Two more singles and a two brought the scores level for the start of the final over, where Langley crashed the first ball away for four to secure victory for his side.
McKendry was awarded Man of the Match for his innings – capping off a career defining year for the all-rounder to go with his 1,000 league runs and four winners medals.

Women’s National teams Jersey, Brazil and Isle Of Man will be competing in a T20 International Tri-Series (with ICC team ranking points) From Sunday 31st August 2025 to Thursday 4th September 2025 at The Barry Jackson Ground. These will be the first ever meeting in T20Is for Brazil Women against both their opponents, which is also their maiden tour of UK.
For Brazil Women, this will be their 3rd overseas tour outside the Americas region having participated in the prestigious Kwibuka Memorial T20I tournament twice in Rwanda in 2022 and 2025. The Cricket Board has set a target to provide continuous exposure for the Women’s team and try to reach the top 30 in the ICC rankings table. Jersey Women, have themselves, been on an upward curve in the last 2-3 years now and will be looking to continue their growth in the European Region. Isle Of Man’s Women’s team will certainly be looking to take part in the pathway tournament for the next edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup and these fixtures will definitely help them gain more exposure against teams who are already part of qualification pathway events.

Junior Outdoor Training
Is on tonight from 6:00pm until 7:30pm! It has been decided that to cover the cost of our new equipment and coaches hours, there will be a small fee of £2.00 to pay per attendee each week at training. There will be an assigned parent coming round with a list to check who has attended and to take the £2.00 (if you forget the £2.00, you can bring it to the next training and keep it rolling over). It’s set to be a warm one so while the kids tire themselves out, the adults can sit back and relax with a drink or two.
Skill Based Cricket Camp
We are running an Skill Based Cricket Camp for kids aged 7 to 16 years old.
This will run from Wednesday 27th August 2025 to Thursday 28th August 2025.

The course will be run by our 1st XI Overseas Player, Abhay Negi.
